2009 has arrived. What's new? What's to look out for?
Besides Britney Spears' ass-kicking comeback, Obama's magnificent inauguration, and the woman who miraculously gave birth to OCTUPLETS, what could possibly happen?
All I know is that 2009 has a lot of crazy things in store for us. We better watch out. Now, let's talk about New Year's resolutions - the goals, the changes. I'm still thinking about mine. He he. I'm not sure yet. I do hope this year will be a rockin' one though. Also, I am hoping that this will be a year for CHANGE. Just like the attention-grabbing message on Obama's campaign materials: "CHANGE". Honestly, I've been thinking about this for a while now. I was always so sure there will come a time for me to actually start something meaningful. I think I need to re-evaluate my advocacies.
My short but sweet stay in Japan gave me all these ideas. Ideas that could possibly be my springboard to change. I guess most of us do know about suicide. In Japan, this is an incredibly huge social issue. Even here in the Philippines, I do not hide the fact that the rates are going up. It's relatively low but still how do we overcome this? Hopelessness and loneliness, how do we survive?
Now, I'm trying to come up with a solution and the formula is just simple. It's simple but it needs much effort and has a lot of heres and theres.
Just today, I was hanging around the uni with mi amigas when a street kid approached us. This boy has the sweetest smile and as I looked into his eyes, I can see a certain kind of joy. It may not be contentment but I am sure there's happiness in his eyes. I wonder how can he, despite his awful situation, keep on smiling and laughing genuinely? That kind of glow is very rare to find. And so, as curious as we were, we asked him to share his life. He told us very sad stories about his family but he acts as if it was just normal and life does go on.
For me, this boy's life is probably the story of a thousand more which led me to think about how can I possibly touch these lives. Life is too short to not share it with others - this is just one of my words-to-live-by for now. Let me start today. This is the start of my change. Maybe you can come up with yours too.
"Be the change you wish to see."
Wishing you a rockin' new year,
D
